The Life of Kaatxwaaxsnéi: A Biography of Florence Shotridge

Florence Shotridge, born in Alaska in 1882, lived in Phiadelphia and worked at the Penn Museum in the early 20th C. Author Murad first studied Kaatxwaaxseni and her life while making a documentary film on her life as a senior project. This paper is an extension of her interest, highlighting Florence’s contributions and collaborations with her husband Louis Shotridge during her lifetime. Much of Louis’ start in the field is thanks to Florence’s English-speaking and Chilkat-weaving skills, but her contributions to Tlingit history and anthropology have been neglected in the historical record. Maria Murad is currently completing a D.Phil in visual anthropology at Oxford University
