We invite you to join us Wednesday, October 27th at 6:00 PM for a poetry reading by Julian Talamantez Brolaski, joined by Cynthia Arrieu-King.

Brolaski is a two-spirit and transgender poet and musician of mixed Mescalero and Lipan Apache, Latin@, and European heritages. Brolaski's work deals with issues of indigeneity, resistance, queer/two-spirit, trans, and mixed-race identity, and the ways that language and song function as medicine. This event is made possible by the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities's Artist Mini-Residency. Brolaski's residency at Penn is hosted jointly by the Creative Writing Program and by the Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies as part of collaborative efforts to create a larger field of thinkers and readers in the fields of trans and queer poetics, environmental humanities, and indigenous studies.

Arrieu-King's new publication The Betweens (Noemi Press 2021), is a highly acclaimed experimental memoir of lyrical prose blocks. Her poetry inquires after the dislocated individual, interrogates the notion of race, and explores connections between strangers. Director of the Creative Writing Program Julia Bloch will introduce.

Registration is required to attend this event in person. Please fill out the PennOpen Pass daily symptom checker the day of the event and be ready to display your Green Pass. Masks and vaccinations are required. Please stay home if you feel ill. This event will be held outside.

JULIAN TALAMANTEZ BROLASKI is the author of Of Mongrelitude (Wave Books 2017), Advice for Lovers (City Lights 2012), and gowanus atropolis (Ugly Duckling Presse 2011), as well as the recipient of the 2020 Cy Twombly Award for Poetry and a 2021 Pew Foundation Fellowship. Julian is also the lead singer and songwriter for Juan & the Pines, whose albums include Glittering Forest (2019) and Saddest Songs (forthcoming 2021). Julian’s poetry was recently included in When the Light of the World was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry (2020) and We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics (Nightboat 2020). Julian lives in Chumash territory in Goleta, California.

CYNTHIA ARRIEU-KING is a snack valet. Her poetry books include People are Tiny in Paintings of China (Octopus 2010), Manifest, winner of the Gatewood Prize chosen by Harryette Mullen, (Switchback 2013), Futureless Languages (Radiator Press--edited by Ryan Eckes and Ian Davisson, right here in Philadelphia itself), and Continuity (Octopus Books 2021). In 2021 she published The Betweens, an experimental memoir, out from Noemi Press. Her poems have appeared in the tiny (edited by Emma Brown Sanders and Gina Myers, also out of Philadelphia), APR, TriQuarterly, and Crazyhorse. She divides her time between Philadelphia and Louisville, Kentucky.
