7th Penn in Latin America and the Caribbean Conference October 10-11

There is growing interest in public and community engaged scholarship within universities, including our own, to promote the co-production of knowledge and more equitable and relevant collaborations that address the priorities of partnering actors and communities. In this inter-school and interdisciplinary conference, we are interested in creating a space to analyze academic practices and the ethical and political impacts of our engaged research. Moreover, in Latin America, academic work may have different nuances, reflections, understandings, and commitments regarding what engaged scholarship is and how it might be practiced. For this PLAC Conference, we are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of how community engaged scholarship is perceived and practiced within the particular histories and situated contexts of Latin America and the Caribbean. Therefore, we aim to address these complex issues in academic work and examine the possibilities, limits, and challenges of engaged scholarship. The conference seeks to motivate participants to think about questions, such as: What are effective strategies to engage with diverse publics? What ethical lessons can be shared, and which others are context-specific? What range of methodologies emerge in different kinds of collaborative relationships and engaged research projects? In addtition to the keynote lecture on October 10 by Yaku Peruz, programming includes the following panels, film screenings, performance, and social time. Panel 1: Empowering Voices: Building Networks across Latin America This panel will explore the process of building an academic, artistic, and scholarship network in Latin America. The panelists will highlight the challenges and opportunities for fostering connections, collaboration, and knowledge exchange within Latin America.

Panel 2: Designing New Methodologies This panel will discuss the challenges and experiences encountered when conducting research that required adopting and designing new methodologies for engaged scholarship collaboration. Panel 3: Engaging Local Communities and Scientists in Environmental Challenges
This panel will showcase and examine specific case studies of community partnerships for addressing environmental challenges. It will emphasize the practices, alliances, and insights gained from these collaborations.

Panel 4: Indigenous and Afro-Descendant Perspectives in Engaged Scholarship This panel will discuss methodologies, challenges, and opportunities for engaging with Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in an effort to achieve a more engaged and respectful academy

Panel 5: Ethical and Political Dimensions of Engaged Scholarship -New Time This panel will explore the ethical and political dimensions of conducting engaged scholarship in Latin America and the Caribbean. It will also discuss researchers' responsibilities, the impact on communities, and the broader societal implications of engaged research.

Panel 6: Amplifying Youth Voices: Collaboration in Educational Research and Practice This panel will discuss collaborative efforts in educational research and practice, focusing on amplifying youth voices. Participants will explore the dynamics of collaboration between teachers and their intergenerational research collaborators, specifically on uplifting the voices of young individuals in educational settings.
